Want to work on your axe throwing skills from home? Why not make your own backyard target to practice! Check out this video where Greg from Revolution Axe in Boston, MA will show you how to make your own axe throwing target from a single 2x10 inch board and a few household supplies.
1. Choosing The Wood You Will Use
We work with pine, but you can use any soft wood, including spruce. It’s really important to look for boards that don’t have too many knots, especially in the center - you don’t want axes bouncing off your bullseye. Also, keep an eye out for darker or heavier pieces of wood that might be denser and harder to stick with your axe. The board should be a 2x10 inch board, 4 feet in length. (Usually sold in lengths of 8 feet or longer).
2. Gathering The Other Supplies You’ll Need
So I built my first wood Target.umm it's not bad and does the job, but for the next one I will use treated wood, liquid nails and wood screws.
You only need a few more supplies to make your axe throwing target:
- Before starting, keep in mind that this throwing target consists of a max of 72 blocks enclosed in a 2×4 frame. I created 6 rows of a dozen blocks with each one measuring 2×4 in width, which is basically around 3.5 inches x 1.5 inches. In simpler terms, the blocks should be.
- Quality construction, safe divided targets for increased revenue, anti-bounce borders for a safer facility, end grain targets for a superior customer experience. These are just a hand full of the advantages of having our company build out your axe lanes and axe throwing facility.
Paint markers or Sharpies - We use paint markers with 15 millimeter tips in red, blue, black, and green, but at home you can use permanent markers.
Drill and one screw
Piece of string at least 15 inches in length
Soda or beer can
3. Find the center of the board
Using a tape measure, measure out 2 feet from the length of the board from top to bottom (the height). Next find the center from left to right (the width), which should be about just over 4.5 inches in. Place your screw in the center, and screw it in so it sticks out but doesn’t move, about an inch or so in.
4. Preparing Your String
Your piece of string is the guide to placing your bullseye and rings in the correct space from the screw on your target. An axe throwing board has one bullseye and 2 larger rings around it. The diameters and radii for the rings are as follows:
Bullseye: 7 inches in diameter, 3.5 inch radius
First ring (red): 17 inches in diameter, 8.5 inch radius
Second ring (blue): 27 inches in diameter, 13.5 inch radius
We will use the radius lengths as a guide. Tie a small loop at the top of your string and stretch the length of the string (including the loop) along a ruler. Mark out on your string where 3.5 inches is for the bullseye, 8.5 inches is for the red ring, and 13.5 inches is for the blue ring, all from the end of the loop.
5. Drawing the bullseye and rings
Put your loop of string around the screw. Using your 3.5 inch mark as a guide on your string, hold the sharpie next to your string and “swing” your marker and string around the screw (check out the video for a visual on this!) This will create a full circle for your bullseye. Since we are using only one plank, this will be the only full circle. Repeat this step for the red ring at the 8.5 inch mark on your string, which will end up looking like two curved lines around your bullseye. You can repeat that for the blue ring (13.5 inch radius) after that. Note that in the video, we only made one ring around the bullseye.
6. Drawing the clutch
The clutch can be drawn using the base of a soda or beer can. Place the bottom of the can 15 inches above the center of the bullseye and just over 4.5 inches from the side. Trace around the bottom of the can to form your circle, and fill it in with green color if you wish! Be sure to use the outer diameter of the can, unless you want to go expert mode on your clutches, of course. (Pro-tip: you can draw multiple clutches on your board to help it last longer!)
7. Placing your target
The bullseye should be 63 inches (5’3’’) off the ground. Use a drill or nails to affix your target to a tree or other base (it’s a bit more work, but some throwers make a stand for their target). Please, make sure you’re throwing in a safe area. You neighbors don’t want your axe to knock the hat off their granny!

Axe throwing has grown by leaps and bounds in terms of popularity over recent years. From being a game exclusively for lumberjacks, there are now axe throwing clubs all around the world. It’s a sport that allows you to make money and become world renowned. Axe throwing is a game where you throw an axe at a target. While the size of the target depends on the availability of the area, the distance from the point of axe throwing is the main thing in the game. There are two leagues that hold events and competitions. When it comes to the size of the size of the throwing target, remember that both the IATF and WATL have their own Axe Throwing Target Dimensions. Now we will dig into the correct dimensions for each league.
WATL Axe Throwing Target Dimensions
Target
- Make ach objective with 3 layers of wood.
- The first layer should cover the OSB or plywood walls.
- Then the second layer is called the back which should be made of wood.
- There should be horizontal 2×10, 4 feet long, drilled into the wall, and well packaged to cover the entire space of the external lens. (Generally requires 6 to 8 boards). This is the back plane where you will drill the target plate.
- A third outer layer is known as the target board. Make these using 2×10 wood, 4 feet long. The goal consists of two parts: 1) the goal 2) the header and footer.
- Precise measurement of the board 2×10
- USA USA: thickness: 1-1 / 2 inches • width 9-1 / 4 inches • length 4 feet
- Metric system: thickness 38 mm • width 235 mm, length 1.22 m
Header and footer:
- Above and below the target, you will set headers and footers. This will help protect the top and bottom of the lens, allowing you to create a brand in the company.
- Combine: Drill a piece of wood 2×10 long and 4 feet long on the target board horizontally, pointing horizontally towards the back.
- Footer: Drill 4 feet of 2×10 pieces of wood horizontally into the base of the target.
- The footer also has the advantage of allowing you to change boards faster and easier.
- Then the top of the footer should be 36 inches off the ground.
- The end product is a 4ft x 6ft back panel, and another layer of wood also completely covers the back with a thickness of 4ft x 6ft.
Design
Each WATL subsidiary must purchase an official target carrier / mold.
The small hole on the left side of the figure on the right, will have a screw to be drilled in the center of the center plate. (Approximately 24 inches in the center of the board. They will be 60 inches from the floor.)
Then you will draw the remaining circles with 20mm black markers.
The hole is 22 inches thick, so the marker is suitable for 1/2 inch thick felt.
The thickness should only be 20mm.
Your will then paint your target red.
You must keep all of the objectives horizontal, inclined objectives are not allowed.
The diameter of the apple’s center ring (red circle in the center) should be 3.5 inches. The target should be 24 inches (60.96 cm) from the bottom of the plate. This should keep the center of the target 60 “off the ground.
Death (2 blue circles) is 1.5 inches in diameter and is inside a 1 point ring.
The bottom of the slam ball is approximately 35.25 inches from the bottom of the board and approximately 2.5 inches from the outside of the board to ensure they are within the 1-point outer ring.
With the exception of lines, target shooting and kills, the target will have no other markings
“#WATL” or “World Throwing League” must be highlighted in the header or footer
The throwing distance need not match with WATL dimensions. You must only use boards with physical marks.
IATF Axe Throwing Target Dimensions
Here are dimensions of the axe throwing target for IATF
Subframes and target construction
Sub-frame
- All International Axe Throwing League targets require a subframe layer at least 1½ inches deep behind the rebound. The goal is to install it on a concrete wall or A-frame. The recommended thickness is 4½ inches, equivalent to the thickness of three 2 × 10 planks. This layer will consist of softwood (spruce or pine).
- Then the bottom of the subframe should be 39 inches off the floor. Check if the terrain is uneven, then there must be a 39-inch margin. You should install the backplane base flush with the base of the subframe. Use a board that is 3/4 inch and 3/4 inch plywood.
Target
- The target surface consists of three 2×10 wooden planks cut 4 feet long. You will install these plates vertically and flat against the backplane, flush with the backplane base and subframe.
- The 2 × 10 center must be aligned with the vertical center of the back plane. A spirit level should be used to ensure that the 2 × 10 center is straight.
- The center of the target must be measured as the center of 2x10x4.
- The remaining 2x10x4 plates are installed on both sides of the center plate. There should be no gaps in the lens, so before attaching it to the backplane, be sure to press the panel firmly against the center panel.
- Each target must then install another 4 feet of wood on each side of the three main 2x10s. These outer edge plates are used to hold existing targets in place when struck by an axe. Therefore, the quality of the wood used is not important, as long as a smooth 4 foot foot can be firmly pressed against the existing target board.

- Ensure the target is located in the middle 2 × 10 [note that the width of 2 × 10 is actually 9 1/2 inches, so the center is 4 5/8 inches]:
- Then the Bullseye should be 7 inches in diameter;
- The diameter of the red (3-point ring) is 17 inches;
- Blue (1 point ring) 27 inches in diameter.
- When measured from the ground, the center of the block should be 63 “from the ground;
- The left or right side panels can be mounted at different heights on the rear panel to keep the nodes away from the main points:
- The side plate is always installed empty, so its height position will not affect the position of the “clutch” or the guide area.
